He began his career as an assistant cameraman at Universal Studios. In 1948, he co-produced and directed the low-budget boxing melodrama, Leather Gloves. During this time, he became fascinated with the television medium and began directing TV shows. He directed episodes of “Racket Squad” and “Big Town” in addition to several others, including the hit series “I Love Lucy.”
In 1999, Asher left Playboy to start his own company called Califa Entertainment. The company grew to become one of the most profitable channels on DirecTV, surpassing HBO and ESPN. Bill Asher’s channels were so successful that they spent over $1 billion in 2002. Unlike most of his predecessors, Asher’s ventures were not free of censorship.
During his tenure at the show, Asher directed or produced over one hundred episodes of Bewitched. He later co-wrote the teleplay for Sisters at Heart with actress Barbara Avedon. He also directed two episodes of the Tabitha series. The two later married. Their children include William Milton Asher and Meredith Coffin McMachen.
